How the String Game Works

Start with a Piece of String

Before teeing off, each player receives the same length of string. Popular options include:

• 1 foot

• 3 feet

• 1 yard/metre

The longer the string, the more opportunities players have to save shots during the round.

Use String to Remove Strokes

Players may cut off part of their string to improve their lie or erase strokes during play.

Common uses include:

• Removing a missed putt

• Escaping a bunker

• Avoiding a penalty stroke

• Improving a bad lie

• Moving out from behind a tree

• Saving a duffed chip

The amount of string cut must equal the distance involved.

Example:
If your ball stops 8 inches from the hole after a putt, you can cut off 8 inches of string and count the putt as holed.

Once It’s Gone, It’s Gone

Used string cannot be reused or tied back together. Strategic players save their string for crucial moments later in the round.

Burn it all on the front nine and things can get very interesting down the stretch.

Optional Rules & Variations

The Generous Rule

Allow players to use string for any shot situation except out of bounds.

The Putting Only Rule

String can only be used on the green to hole out putts.

Team String Game

Pairs or scramble teams share one piece of string for the entire round.

Risk & Reward Version

Players can gamble extra string before a hole:

• Win the hole = keep it

• Lose the hole = cut it immediately

Sudden Death Finish

If players are tied after 18 holes, remaining string becomes the tiebreaker.
