Amateur golfer shows Awesome drive to break World Record
Amateur London golfer Roger Southam is to endure another gruelling test of stamina as he attempts to break the Guinness World Record for the most holes played in 12 hours – challenging the current record of 221.
The chief executive and chairman of property management firm Chainbow – who last year played golf on four courses, in four countries, in one day for charity – will, as always, don the eye-catching wears of Scotland’s funkiest clothing company, Royal & Awesome, when he attempts the feat.
Southam will challenge the current record of 221 – held by Canadian Scott Holland since 2005 – on September 28, at Fulwell GC, Middlesex, to raise vital funds for Sparks, a children’s medical research charity.
Since 1991, Sparks has funded more than £27m of pioneering children’s medical research through fundraising initiatives, and Southam is aiming to add £10,000 to the funds.
He said: “I am terribly excited by the challenge but also daunted at the same time. I was hoping for a course with a travellator down all its fairways but no such luck!
“Sparks is an extremely worthwhile cause and I am delighted to be able to do my bit to support its work. I’m training hard and hoping for good weather – it seems foolish but I want to claim the record and help raise as much as I possibly can for Sparks.”
Royal & Awesome brand director Graeme Smeaton added: “Roger is undertaking an ‘Awesome’ feat and we are delighted to support his world record pursuit by kitting him out in our funky, bright colours.
“Royal & Awesome is always on the look-out for quirky, unique opportunities to help raise funds for charity and this certainly fits the bill. We had a fantastic time supporting Roger last year and we’re really looking forward to seeing him in action.”
